Koala yawning in a tree

Koalas usually curl up in eucalyptus trees during the day, then move out at night, climbing up and down the branches in search of eucalyptus leaves. It has a large appetite, a narrow feeding path, and will not eat anything other than eucalyptus. Although there are more than 300 species of eucalyptus trees in Australia, the koala only eats 12 of them. It particularly likes to eat the leaves of rose eucalyptus, mannose eucalyptus and spotted eucalyptus. An adult koala can eat about one kilogram of eucalyptus leaves a day. Eucalyptus leaves have a rich, aromatic juice, containing cineole and water anisiterpenes, which gives koalas a rich, sweet smell of eucalyptus.
