Jellyfish Lake, located on El Marque, one of the rocky islands in Palau, was formed about 12,000 years ago when a uplift in the earth's crust raised the island above sea level, trapping water in its central sink.

Jellyfish lakes are home to millions of jellyfish, which act as hosts for algae and survive by forming symbiotic relationships with them. The hardy animals are often able to bounce back in large numbers, though the lake's population is decimated by warmer temperatures caused by el Nino, which occurs roughly every 10 years.
