The aq'am, Cowichan Tribes, Lil'wat Nation, and Seabird Island First Nations in British Columbia hold a ceremony to mark the implementation of their education jurisdiction agreements, which came into effect on May 25 and 26, 2022. The agreements recognize the four First Nations' authority over primary and secondary education on reserve in their communities. Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller is among those taking part in the event. While provinces have jurisdiction over education, First Nations education falls under federal jurisdiction. The federal government and thirteen First Nations began negotiations in 2006. Four communities voted to ratify agreements in December 2021 and January 2022. The B.C. government also passed legislation in October 2021 that allowed First Nations to certify and regulate teachers.
