Learn More About Dr. Raul Cano:
Dr. Raul Cano is the President and CEO of PaleoBiotica, a company focused on agricultural and environmental solutions.
He received a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Montana and holds two master’s degrees, one in fungal genetics and the other in Clinical Microbiology. He also earned certifications in public health and environmental microbiology.
He began his career as a Professor of Microbiology and has been Professor Emeritus since his retirement from Academia in 2005. During his tenure there, he evolved into a microbial ecologist from his original training as a medical microbiologist. The concept of the microbial guild as a solution for environmental challenges originated during that time.
Together with Robin Steele, Dr. Cano founded Ambergene, a drug discovery company focusing on the isolation and characterization of ancient microorganisms from Amber, Deep Sea Cores and other ancient environments. During that time, he developed methods for resuscitating dormant microbes and created a library of more than 2,000 bacteria and fungi. These are unencumbered and part of our PaleoCult collection. He collaborated with J&J, Merck and MPI.
In 2000, he founded and directed the Environmental Biotechnology Institute until he retired in 2010. During that time, Dr. Cano directed several bioremediation projects at the Guadalupe Dunes Unocal petroleum production fields.
He applied “microbiome restoration” solutions before the microbiome word was coined. He also developed methods for delivery of bioremediation genes to target organisms in soils and a patented process for identifying likely drilling sites for petroleum and natural gas exploration
He served for 2+ years as Executive Director for Research at the American Type Culture Collection innovation center.
He was the Chief Scientific Officer at The BioCollective. Among his many achievements during his tenure at the BioCollective, he has led the design and development of more than 20 probiotic formulations using his expertise in microbiology, ecology and genomics to select synergistic guilds for the restoration of the healthy gut microbiome.
