Exterior Door Installation Made Easy! | Homeowner's can DO IT! | 2020/21

Had a customer request for an exterior door to their basement/crawl space. I went over and look at what they had and amazingly the structure was framed for a door but had been sided over. I am assuming it was a builder’s option that was not taken.

I took a trip to Home Depot and picked up a Jeld-Wen 30” x 80” Steel Clad Exterior door and an Kwikset Smart Key Exterior Door Knob and Dead Bolt set for a about $200.00. After removing the siding from the existing framed door, I was able to set the new door in, plumb it, and seal with Great Stuff spray foam.

The Kwikset Lock made things very convenient, in that we were able to re-key the door to match their existing locks. This was an intermediate level install, but anyone with basic knowledge of construction techniques could easily accomplish this install in a few hours. This crawl space, with a little work and its new full-size door can now be used for storage, and someday a finished basement! Check out the video!
