"Having a well-formed and strong embouchure is paramount to all professional trumpet
players. However, acquiring such an embouchure is often difficult because many players do not
know how to properly form and develop their own best settings in terms of mouthpiece's
placement, jaw position, tongue placement, muscle firmness, lip position, instrument angle, and
mouthpiece pressure.
Students sometimes seek the advice of teachers, hoping they can guide them by giving
verbal “answers” to their embouchure problems. However, even from the best of teachers,
words are not enough. Each student must gradually learn the feel of his or her own correct
embouchure by practicing specific playing exercises designed to make the embouchure stronger
and more efficient. As the player develops these qualities, improvement is made automatically
in regard to tone, endurance, power, flexibility, range, response, and mouthpiece pressure.
Lip bends and pedal tones have been valuable tools for many successful players. In order
for these exercises to develop the embouchure effectively, care must be taken to play them in a
correct manner. Therefore, the student must carefully follow the instructions given in each of the
15 studies." - David Hickman
