The main features of the cobra family are short maxillae with grooved teeth at the front end, often followed by one to several fine teeth, which are the anterior grooved teeth type of snakes. This family of snakes is not active and has an oval-shaped head, which is not easily distinguished from non-venomous snakes. The back of the head has large symmetrical scales and no cheek scales. The pupils are rounded, the tail is cylindrical, and the entire spine has vertebral hypoplasia.

Cobras often prefer to live in bushes or bamboo forests in plains, hills, and mountains, and are also commonly found on hillsides near graves, footwaters, streams and fish ponds, fields, and homes. The snake has a wide diet, eating snakes, fish, frogs, birds, eggs and scorpions. It is a diurnal snake, mainly moving around during the day to feed.
