Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #6: Nine Men's Morris

Game #6 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a game that dates back to the Roman Empire and will be very familiar to Assassin's Creed fans, Nine Men's Morris. The game consists of three phases: the placement phase, the moving phase, and the flying phase. In the placement phase, players take turns placing their men on the 24 holes in the 7x7 board. If a player lines up three of their men in a line horizontally or vertically, they form a "mill" and the player can then remove one of their opponent's men for the rest of the game (however, they cannot break an opponent's mill). Once all of the men have been placed, the moving phase begins. In this phase, players take turns moving one of their men to an adjacent point still trying to create mills and eliminate the other player's men. In this phase, a player can break a mill by moving a man to an adjacent space and then back again, reforming the mill and each time taking out an opponent's man. When one player is down to three men, the flying phase begins. In this phase, the player with only three men is no longer restricted in their movement and can now move their men to any open space on the board. When a player is either reduced to two men (and thus unable to create a mill) or unable to make a legal move, that player loses the game.

There are four skill levels of CPU players: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which must be beaten in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to achieve mastery of the game. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Nine Men's Morris:

1. Nine Men's Morris has been played for around 2,000 years. An early allusion to it is found in Ovid's poetry.
2. This is a solved game, meaning the theoretical ideal way to play has been discovered. It ends in a tie.
3. "Morris" comes not from a person's name, but from merellus, the Latin word for "piece."
4. The lines of the game board were often printed on the reverse side of checkerboards. (Personal addendum: the checkerboard I used to have as a kid didn't have Nine Men's Morris, but did provide rules for checker-based variants of Hare And Hounds and Gomoku, a couple other games in this collection)
