"There are sacraments of evil as well as of good about us, and we live and move to my belief in an unknown world, a place where there are caves and shadows and dwellers in twilight. It is possible that man may sometimes return on the track of evolution, and it is my belief that an awful lore is not yet dead." -Arthur Machen.

Here's the Hebraised Hellenistic Greek motto I tried to stumble my way through. No idea how I did on pronunciation: "HEL • HELOYM • SOTHER • EMMANVEL • SABAOTH • AGLA • TETRAGRAMMATON • AGYROS • OTHEOS • ISCHYROS • ATHANATOS • IEHOVA • VA • ADONAI • SADAY • HOMOVSION • MESSIAS • ESCHEREHEYE."

The picture used is from the Maps Collection in the Library of Congress, first published by Currier and Ives, depicting the neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn circa 1875, from the base of the Brooklyn Bridge to the end of the island.

It's a good thing that Suydam is a real name, and I found an interview online with one Arthur Suydam who pronounced his own name for us, so I could get a valid pronunciation of the name! It was a much greater challenge, however, to find a local pronouncing the name Chepachet, but I did finally find that, so I got that right too. So many weird, but real, names in this one, but I think I nailed them all.

Apparently Lovecraft himself described this story as "rather long and rambling, and I don't think it is very good", and if I may be so bold, I completely agree with that assessment. Ah well, not every story can be a winner.
