Game #9 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a strategy game from 19th-century France, Hare and Hounds. In this game, one player takes control of a hare and the other takes control of three hounds. The hare is trying to slip past the group of hounds to the other side of the board, while the hounds are trying to trap and immobilize the hare. The hounds can only move forward, diagonally forward, or sideways, not backwards. The hare can move anywhere on a line including backwards. The hare wins if it can slip past the hounds' line of defense. The hounds win if the hare can't move.Show more

Personal story: As I mentioned in the previous Checkers episode, my checkerboard had instructions for a checker-base variation of this game, using four black checkers as the hounds and one red checker as the hare.

There are four skill levels of CPU players: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which must be beaten in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to achieve mastery of the game. Also, you can choose to play as either the hare or the hounds (I will be playing as both on my road to mastery), and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Hare and Hounds:

1. The game originated in France and was so popular with its soldiers that it was originally known as the French Military Game.
2. The hounds in this game appear to be modeled after the Finnish Hound. In real life, they are calm, sociable dogs with patches of brown, white, and black fur.
3. Dogs were first domesticated over 10,000 years ago.
4. Though popular media usually depicts hares snacking on carrots, they also enjoy celery.
