How to know if I can repot an orchid | How long do I have to wait to repot a new orchid & why?

Repotting new orchids guide! How can one know that repotting a newly arrived orchid into a collection, is the right time? What if there are no new roots growing for months on end? What if I do not have a controlled environment that can extend my growing season throughout the winter to encourage new roots or repot while new roots grow mid winter? How long do I have to wait to repot a new orchid and why? Inorganic and organic media makes no difference when asking these questions!
