New Mexico Civil Guard = Covington Catholic story 2.0?

Stephen Baca was charged with aggravated battery in connection with shooting someone at a demonstration over a statue of Juan de Oñate in Albuquerque, New Mexico on June 15, 2020. An organization called the New Mexico Civil Guard was initially blamed for the violence and was demonized by media and figures in the local and state government. Beyond the actions of Baca which will be decided by the legal system, has the NMCG been smeared when evidence shows they were in fact the entity most responsible for de-escalating the violence & securing the scene until police arrived?
