The number of people killed by tropical cyclone Gombe in Mozambique has risen to 12 in the coastal province of Nampula, the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD) said on Sunday.

"The deaths were caused by collapsed houses and fallen trees," the INGD said in a statement, noting that all deaths recorded by its ground teams so far have occurred in Nampula, where the storm made landfall.

It said another person was reported missing in the neighboring province of Zambezia, which was also hit by the storm that has affected 30,054 people in Nampula and 610 in Zambezia.

Fourty people were injured and 3,014 houses damaged or flooded in the storm, affecting 113 schools with 14,775 schoolchildren, according to the statement.
