Ukraine claims control over Kyiv as Russian forces move to east, south

1. Ukraine on Saturday claimed complete control over the region near its capital, Kyiv, as Russian forces reportedly move in on eastern and southern Ukraine.
According to Reuters, Ukrainian Presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovich... said those areas can now expect to see brutal fighting.
Having withdrawn from the northern front, Russian troops are now intensifying their attack on the Donbas region.
They've already, on Friday, succeeded in capturing the city of Izyum, a key point on the eastern front.
CNN reported Saturday that it's possible that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could directly hold negotiations with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, pointing out that Ukraine's negotiation team have claimed progress in negotiations with the Russian side.

Russia hopes that during the special operation in Ukraine, one of its main tasks to rescue the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) and restore their statehood will be fulfilled, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a televised interview with Belarus-24 channel on Saturday.

"We state that the sovereignty of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics has been recognized by Russia. We recognized their independence, we recognized them as independent states. The operation was initiated at the request of these two republics. One of the main objectives of the operation is to rescue these republics and restore their statehood within the borders of 2014, within the borders that are enshrined in the constitution of both the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics," Peskov noted.
