Floods in South Africa: Nearly 400 deaths

The magnitude of the tragic floods that hit eastern South Africa earlier in the week It has come out in all its harshness.

South African authorities reported that the death toll in the southeastern province of KwaZulu Natal has risen to 395 as a result of heavy rains and floods.

At least 55 missing and more than 40,000 displaced… More than 4,000 soldiers and police are participating in the search efforts.
The worst part has been borne by the region of Durban.

As thousands of people queue for drinking water, city officials and volunteers try to clean the beaches of all the debris left behind by the floods. Authorities are on high alert as more rains are expected in the region.

“We have received indications from the South African Weather Service that there could be more rain in large parts of the (KwaZulu-Natal) province,” said the cProvincial Councilor for Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs, Sipho Hlomuka.

“According to the warning we have received, damaging winds are expected in areas of the coast from noon today until Saturday night” as well as “torrential rains”, added Hlomuka.
