Abe was shot while campaigning in the western city of Nara, a government spokesman has said.

Two gunshots could be heard as the video jerked sharply, followed by security personnel tackling a man believed to be the suspect.

Abe, 67 was in a grave condition, current Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said, expressing his wishes for the country's longest-serving prime minister to survive the ordeal.

Police said a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out the shooting had been arrested. NHK quoted the suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, as telling police he was dissatisfied with Abe and wanted to kill him.
