We live in a world that is culturally and historically rich. Since its inception, the world has seen a number of kings and queens, who have registered their names in history books we read today. During their reign, a number of incredible forts were also built, magnificent ones that still stand tall as the testimony to those times.

Nizwa Fort, Oman
Nizwa, a fort city that used to be the capital of Oman centuries ago, is renowned for its grand 17th century fort. It was built by Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya’ribi. The prime features of the Nizwa Fort is the humongous cylindrical tower, which looks stunning. The fort also has a museum that is home to ancient artefacts from the 17th century.

Queenscliff Fort, Australia
Located an hour and a half away from Melbourne, Queenscliff Fort is absolutely stunning. This seaside hamlet in Queenscliff is among the best-preserved forts in the country that was constructed in 1860. Today, the fort is an important attraction in the region and a lot of measures have been taken to restore the old arms and ammunition here. Guided tours are also available.

Masada Fort, Jerusalem
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Masada Fort is set at the top of a rock plateau in Judaean Desert. One can enjoy the stunning views of the Dead Sea from here. As per history books, the fort was built by Herod the Great between 37 and 31 BC. The fort is noted for an unpleasant incident, wherein a number of soldiers and families committed suicide when they couldn’t resist the seige by Roman Empire.

Jaisalmer Fort, India
Set in the Golden City of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, the massive fort was built by Rajput king Rawal Jaisal in the year 1156. It sits in the heart of the Thar Desert, and the fort is one of a kind in India and in the world, as it is arguably the only Living Fort of the country. The fort is also known as Sonal Qilla or Golden Fort.

Mehrangarh Fort, India
This 15th-century fort in Jodhpur city of Rajasthan will transport you back in time. A massive hilltop fort, Mehrangarh was constructed by Rajput ruler Rao Jodha. Today, the fort is counted among the most magnificent forts in the world.
