Chevy Volt Off Road Recovery! Black Eagle Mine Road, Joshua Tree National Park

On Black Eagle Mine Road, approximately 7 miles from Pinto Basin Road just outside of Joshua Tree National Park we came upon this Chevy Volt that was hopelessly stuck and in need of a true offroad recovery. The Volt was blocking the road at the bottom of a small ravine so we could not get a Jeep around it, or in front of it to yank it from it's (only) proper tow-point in the front. Because the Chevy Volt has no rear axle per-se, and no tow-point in the rear, our only option for recovery was to put a recovery-strap through the rear wheels and pull it a few feet backwards. From there we were able to stack some rocks, choose a better line, and with some momentum and spotting, get it moving again.
The driver had already been there for a few hours in the 105°F temperature and was contemplating the 7 mile walk back to the nearest road. The car had damage to the front bumper, a non-plugable punctured tire sidewall, and no spare tire! After escorting the driver back to Pinto Basin Road we took them to Indio where they called a tow-truck.
