Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #28: War

Game #28 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is another simple card game, War! This version plays a little differently than the version I played when I was little. In this version, players lay out three cards face-down in front of them, and then choose one to send out into battle. The higher card (Aces are high, Twos are low) takes both cards. If both cards are the same, another battle begins and whoever wins the next one takes all the cards from the previous battles as well. Once both players have exhausted their draw piles, whoever won more cards in battle wins the game.

Because this is a luck-based game, there are no adjustable difficulty settings for the CPU, so all you have to do is win once to master the game. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are two pieces of trivia about War:

1. In some regions of Japan, both players call out "This. Is. War!" as they play their cards. (I prefer to say "This. Is. Sparta!" instead, but that works too)
2. In the classic variant of War, players don't choose cards. Since it involves no choice on the player's part, its status as a game is dubious.

Personal story: Per the second piece of trivia, the version I played as a kid simply had players splitting the deck into two halves and drawing the top card from the deck. When the two cards tied, each player would lay down three cards before the second battle ensued, and again the winner would take everything. The game would go until one player took the entire deck, and that player would win.
