The moon formed about 45 billion years ago according to one theory, the Earth collided with another early planet and debris from that collision broke off as it orbited the Earth and accumulated to form today's moon. The Moon is the solar system's five natural moons The moon orbits the Earth at an average distance of 30 earths and it rotates at the same speed so as it orbits our planet the same side of the moon is always facing the Earth
