Building a Healthy Church: Balancing the Christians Dual Citizenship, Titus 3:1-8

This passage from our Titus study just happens to coincide with this weekend’s holiday.
As we prepare to celebrate this country’s 246th birthday, it is more and more apparent that Christ-followers need to examine our role in this nation. There was a time (not really that long ago) when the vast majority of Americans (80+%) identified as Christians. Most people when to church on Sundays, respected the “Good Book,” and had a relatively Biblical worldview.
That has changed, and radically so in the last decade, and many Christians find themselves unsure of what to do in this increasingly pagan society.
Do we fight to get our country back? Do we retreat and pray for the Rapture? Do we do a little of both or none of the above? This can be a confusing time.
Philippians 3:20 is clear, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ…” Christians are citizens of God’s Kingdom, and our allegiance is to our King and His country.
But, we also live here. We have relationships here, friends and family here. We want to see people succeed and be healthy. Most importantly, we want them to become citizens of Heaven as well—we want them to trust in Jesus Christ.
Thankfully, God doesn’t call us to one or the other. Christ followers are not called to join monasteries and leave society. We are to be in society serving as ambassadors of our home Kingdom. Serving and encouraging, and always pointing people to our King.
In our passage today, Paul instructs Titus on how to live as a Christ-follower in a pagan society.
