Canada on the front line against Russia

As NATO embarks on its biggest shake-up since the Cold War, Canada's role remains uncertain.

We will make a historic decision," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg

Russian troops invaded Ukraine on the morning of February 24, striking by land and sea as air raids rained down on cities, in an all-out assault unlike anything seen in Europe since the Second World War.

The following months have left thousands dead, millions more displaced, caused hunger and fuel shortages and fundamentally changed the world order.

Now the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is poised to embark on the biggest overhaul of the alliance's deterrence capabilities since the Cold War at a leaders summit in Spain, but Canada's role in the new defense strategy remains uncertain.

NATO leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, have gathered in Madrid for an important summit to discuss how they will respond to Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
