Putin declares victory in Luhansk province after Ukrainian forces pull back

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday declared victory in the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, one day after Ukrainian forces withdrew from their last remaining bulwark of resistance in the province.

This means Russian forces have moved one step closer to capturing the entire Donbas region.

And as Global’s Redmond Shannon explains, it’s also a major comedown from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initial goals for the invasion.
