Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #32: Billiards

Game #32 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is technically not a game but rather a classification of cue sports, Billiards! More specifically covering the Pool subdivision of Billiard sports, this game is actually three pocket billiards games in one: 8-Ball (the world's most widely played cue sport), 9-Ball (the dominant professional game), and Simple Rules (the only game which can't be played online). In billiard sports, players use a cue stick to hit a plain-white cue ball into a group of numbered balls, knocking them around a cloth table into 6 pockets on the table. The rules for each of the three different games differ.

In 9-Ball, nine balls are racked up in a diamond shape. The first player "breaks" by hitting the cue ball into the 1 ball at the front of the diamond knocking the other balls around the table. If one of the numbered balls gets knocked into one of the pockets, that player shoots again. If a player sinks the 9 ball on the break, it's an instant win (also known as a "golden break"). After the break, each player will hit the lowest-numbered ball on the table first and sink the numbered balls in succession to eventually sink the 9 ball. However, you don't have to sink the balls in order. As long as the cue ball makes first contact with the lowest numbered ball, you can keep shooting as long as any ball goes into one of the pockets. Knocking the lowest numbered ball into another ball and sinking that one is known as a combination shot. It is possible to sink the 9 ball and win early via this method. The first player to legally sink the 9 ball (with no fouls such as not making first contact with the lowest-numbered ball or sinking the cue ball) wins.

In 8-ball, 15 balls are racked up in a triangle shape. After a player sinks either a solid (1-7) or a striped (9-15) ball, they are assigned to that group. Two players take turns trying to sink balls from their group until all 7 of their group are sunk. Once an entire group is sunk, the player assigned to that group can go after the 8 ball. They must call a pocket before shooting and legally sink the 8-ball (no fouls!) in that pocket to win the game.

In Simple Rules, 9 balls are racked up similar to their initial setup in 9-Ball, and the objective is simple: sink more balls than your opponent.

There are four levels of CPU opponents to face: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which must be beaten in order. You don't actually have to beat the Impossible CPU to master the game, but I wanted to for completion's sake. In order to master the game, you just have to win once in each game mode. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Billiards:

1. Ivory from animal horns was originally used to make the tip of the cue stick. Fortunately, there are better ways to do it now.
2. Games like billiards have their origins in ancient Greece, circa 400 BCE
3. In real life, if you want to get fancy, you can try putting the cue stick behind your back and hitting the ball that way.
4. The first type of plastic used in billiards was at risk of exploding. Don't worry, that doesn't happen anymore!

Personal story: My grandpa on my dad's side had a pool table in his basement. The house my family and I stayed in for my oldest cousin's wedding also had a pool table in it, and we played a lot of it there.
