A Madison doctor who pleaded guilty in November to health care fraud was sentenced to four years in federal prison and with one of his co-conspirators must pay more than $7.2 million in restitution.

Dr. Shahjahan Sultan, who formerly practiced in Vicksburg, was one of four people accused in a multi-million dollar health care fraud involving expensive compounded pain creams and weight-loss pills.

According to Sultan's attorney, former state Supreme Court Justice Chuck McRae, at least $4 million has already been repaid.

Sultan stood before U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett on Tuesday at William M. Colmer Federal Courthouse and apologized for his actions — not just to the judge, but to everyone who was affected by the fraud.

"I was an idiot, pardon my harsh language," he said. "This has been a monkey on my back. I want this all to go away, but it never goes away."
