Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #35: Carrom

Game #35 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is another form of billiards that originated in India, Carrom! In this game, players use a striker (like the cue ball in billiards) to sink all nine of their coins into any of the four corner pockets. Like in billiards, if you sink one of your coins, you get another turn. If you don't, play passes to the opponent. If you scratch (sink the striker), one of your pocketed coins is returned to the table. However, players cannot pocket their last coin until the queen (the red coin) has been pocketed. If you sink all of your coins with the queen still on the table, you lose. Pocketing the queen is a little different than pocketing any ordinary coin. First you sink the queen like normal, then you have to sink one of your own coins immediately afterward to cover the queen's escape. If you fail to cover the queen, it will be returned to the table. The first player to sink all of their coins after the queen has been pocketed (doesn't matter which player sinks the queen) wins.

There are four levels of CPU opponents to face in this game: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be beaten in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Carrom:

1. The board is 29 inches square and the coins are around 1.25 inches in diameter.
2. This game is very popular in South Asia! It has also spread to Europe and the Americas through immigration.
3. It is thought that this game was invented in India or Egypt.
4. Carrom is a kind of billiards, though it's not played on a special table.

Personal story: My high school chemistry teacher had a carrom table in his classroom, and I'd sometimes play during lunch or after school.
