Sunday Longplay - Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 (Switch) - Episode 1: The Demon's Crown

This week on Sunday Longplay, it's time for a sequel to a retro spin-off to a game I backed on Kickstarter and one of my favorite indie games from 2018. Welcome to Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2!

Released July 10, 2020, Curse of the Moon 2 follows up on the first Bloodstained spin-off with Zangetsu continuing to fight the demon's curse with allies new and old. While the cast from the first Curse of the Moon were basically expies of the cast of Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse, the cast in this game mixes and matches different cast members from different Castlevania titles. You got Zangetsu returning from the first game, who was like Grant from Castlevania 3 with his short-ranged weapon. His first new ally Dominique (despite being the big bad in Ritual of the Night) is like a blend of two different Castlevania characters: Eric Lecarde from Castlevania Bloodlines with her spear, with a little hint of Sypha's magic. His other ally Robert plays similarly to Albus from Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (my personal favorite Metroidvania-style Castlevania game) with his long-range guns. His other new ally, Hachi, is an original character, a dog who pilots a giant suit of magic armor to kill demons.

Like the first game, there are multiple paths through each of the stages, some of which can only be accessed by certain characters. However, some characters are only available in certain episodes, which brings me to what differentiates this game from its prequel. While the first Curse of the Moon had three difficulty levels (Normal, Nightmare, and Ultimate), only Nightmare really had a different story and the gameplay change of having every part member from the start except Zangetsu. Whereas in this game, the story is divided into four episodes, each of which basically play like the difficulty levels in the first game. Episode 1 is basically Normal mode, with you recruiting each new ally one by one (in this game you don't get the option to ignore or kill them, though) and slaying what is thought to be the big bad at the end. Episode 2 is basically Nightmare mode, where you go through a harder version of the game with your whole party minus one (and also offers a branching path in the story depending on the collection of pieces of a story item), and the final episode is basically Ultimate mode where the gang is all here and powered up for the final showdown.

Part 1 of this segmented Sunday Longplay covers the first episode: The Demon's Crown. This episode is basically Normal Mode from the first game. You recruit your new allies one by one, your initial choice of paths is limited, and the bosses are easier than they will be in the other future episodes! Even then, this game already feels much harder than the first game. Those looking for a Castlevania-style game with similar levels of oldschool difficulty will find it here! Like the first game, there are two difficulty settings: Casual and Veteran. For the authentic Castlevania experience and because I'm a masochist, I'm playing Veteran mode!
