Roe V. Wade overturned: Protesters in Australia, France chant against US Supreme Court decision

Thousands of Australians joined protests across the country on Saturday against the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of women's constitutional right to abortion.

"We're here to stand up for women's rights in Australia and around the world. Millions of women in the United States have had their rights stripped from them and we're angry about that," said Liz Walsh, one of the organizers of the protest in Melbourne, with police estimating the attendance at around 15,000.

As in the United States now, in Australia, abortion laws are set by states. The country's most populous state, New South Wales, only legalized abortion in 2019.

In France, hundreds of Parisians protested the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Saturday.

Protesters in Paris marched towards the Eiffel Tower, chanting, "Solidarity with women all over the world," and holding up placards with slogans like, "My body = my decision."

Abortion was legalized in France in 1975, pushed by President Valery Giscard d'Estaing's feminist health minister, Simone Veil.
