Be Merciful. How dost thou know
But thou thyself mightst fall as low,
But for some happy trick of chance,
Or helpful freak of circumstance,
Some lucky accident of race,
Or birth, or blood, or dwelling-place?

Be merciful. God's even scales
Decide where human judgment fails;
Who seem most lost, some day may lie
Nearer God's heart than you or I:
We cannot tell, we do not know:
Be merciful. The Christ was so.
