After two years without in-person Canada Day celebrations due to COVID-19, festivities returned on Friday, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon attending as guest speakers in Ottawa.
Trudeau spoke about the discovery of unmarked graves at and near former residential schools in the past year, saying that it has given an opportunity to "learn more about that history." He said during a Friday's ceremony that it was "the time to recommit ourselves to always be there for one another."
Simon also spoke about reconciliation on Friday, saying the "spirit of celebration does not extend to everyone" and spoke of the impact the discover of unmarked graves near former residential schools has had on Indigenous people. She called on everyone to work together to "walk the road to reconciliation," saying it begins with "understanding and respect." Simon also asked Canadians as they celebrate Canada Day to continue working to an inclusive society.
The prime minister also thanked frontline workers, as well as spoke about various contributions of other Canadians, saying that "Canada Day is Canadians' Day."
The governor general thanked Canadians for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, "particularly" frontline workers who she said were a big part of the reason people can be out in the world, adding there were "so many things to look forward to."
She also spoke about the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, calling her a "reassuring presence."
In normal years, Canada Day festivities draw thousands to the lawns and streets around Parliament Hill for concerts, fireworks, and parties. COVID-19 forced celebrations to be virtual instead, in 2020 and 2021.
This year, the party is back live and in-person after two years of lockdowns, but it won’t be taking place against the familiar backdrop of the parliamentary precinct.
Instead, official celebrations will be based at LeBreton Flats, the festival grounds roughly a 20-minute walk west of Parliament Hill, as the parliamentary precinct battens down after some of the "Freedom Convoy" blockade organizers vowed to return to the capital on Friday.
