Democracy, dissent quashed as Hong Kong marks 25 years since handover to China

When Britain handed Hong Kong back to China's rule in 1997, China promised the territory's independence would be preserved for at least 50 years.

Instead, Beijing has rolled back democratic freedoms. Once one of the freest societies in Asia, the city is now firmly under the grasp of China's authoritarian influence.

On the 25th anniversary of the handover to China, experts say this serves as a warning for China's intentions with Taiwan.
