"The White Man Stole This Land" is an old song of mine from back in in 2005-ish. I usually play in on acoustic guitar, but lately I've been trying to play everything with my banjo, in an effort to simplify my stage life. I just strum the banjo with my thumb and it's acutually not that bad, perhaps because of the Hartford Banjo with the wooden tone ring?

It's always been perplexing for me how to be at peace with the fact that the U is a democracy that was built on land stolen from the Indigenous People of North America. I have high respect for The Indigenous People and the U. In the full episode (Episode 21) I explore this topic a bit and caution the world that the we need to unite or else the nefarious forces of the world will do the same to us as the Europeans did to the Indigenous People of the Americas.

Lyrics:
driving down a long highway
in New Mexico
reservations all around me
how is it so
the white man stole this land
from the indians
to form a democracy

though my driving arm is burning
I have a farmer's tan
shirtless, my skin is reflecting
like grass under a stone
these motorhomes are giant
they're like a ship
on this road
drivers are old and retired

rest stopped under a shade tree
a bird is singing
though I wish that I could fly
he is dreaming
that his arms were not tied
behind his back in the form of wings
he wants to walk for the rest of his days
