At the beginning of 2013, Hawaii began its annual tennis tournament schedule with the Maui Challenger Wildcard tournament at the Oahu Club. Winner of this event would receive a wildcard entry into the then Tennis Championships of Maui, an ATP Challenger level pro tournament! The local qualifier would attract some of the top college tennis players in the islands, including the likes of the University of Hawaii Manoa & Hawaii Pacific University. At the time, these two schools had the strongest college tennis lineups as their players entered this event & consistently received seeds across the draw.

That year, after the dust settled, two HPU players stood on opposite sides of the net for the championship: Petr Michnev & Gerald Moretti. Petr, the then #1 player for HPU, powered his way through the draw without dropping a single set! No matter who he faced that event, he never kept the match close. Petr played efficient, powerful, & smart tennis & it earned him the status of "heavy favorite" going into the final round of the tournament. His teammate, Gerald Moretti, was no slouch either! Gerald, a somewhat underdog in the event, found his stride early as he battled past another HPU teammate, Yann Renault, as well as veteran from the Big Island, Karl Sloss. His lefty game helped him claw his way to the last round, where he would face his toughest challenge of the tournament thus far. You could say this was a showcase event for the Sharks Men's Tennis team that January as it would be an all HPU final to decide the wildcard!
