Baat Jaam Dou 八斬刀 - 4 Versions - Wing Chun Butterfly Knife Form
*Originally uploaded elsewhere September 18, 2019. This was our second real location, rent sharing with The Phoenix Society of Historical Swordsmanship and Viñas Arnis. We were at this location between 2018 and 2021. 1829 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85016. We changed the name again to more accurately reflect our MMA with a focus on classical Chinese, French, and English Boxing: Black Sun Boxing. This is where we started to get more serious about filming content.*

~OP:
The final form in the Wing Chun system. The "8-cut blades" or Baat Jaam Dou. These knives have been called many things, including hudiedao/wu dip dou, mother-child/mother-son knives, hung sing butterfly knives, among others. The knives are peculiar to Southern Chinese martial arts, but not by any means exclusive to Wing Chun.
The term Baat Jaam Dou may refer to the form more than the knives. Over time, the knives changed from stabbing-oriented to cutting-oriented, for several reasons. The term "baat" 八 is literally the number 8, but also means "all around, all sides" and in the context of the art of these knives may refer to how they can cut from all angles, and not necessarily specific cuts performed. The term "jaam" 斬 means to cut, chop or sever. Pretty cut and dry, but we do include thrusts as well. The final term, "dou" 刀 doesn't mean knife or sword, but refers to a category of blade construction typified by a single edge and thicker spine. This term is applied to sabers, knives, and even polearms. For our purposes, knife is sufficient, if a bit inaccurate.
八Baat: number eight, all around, all sides
斬Jaam: cut, chop, sever
刀Dou: knife, single edged blade
