Russia-Ukraine conflict: Canada to bolster forces deployed to NATO battlegroup in Latvia

Canada is upgrading the NATO battlegroup it leads in Latvia.

Defence Minister Anita Anand made the announcement at the NATO summit in Madrid, saying Canada is stepping up its contributions to the alliance in a big way.

She declined to say exactly how many more troops Canada will contribute to the mission.

As it has been at past summits, Canada is being pressured to live up to a 2014 promise to spend at least two per cent of its gross domestic product on defence.

But the Liberal government has refused to publicly commit to that target or lay out a schedule for meeting it.
