Crafty woman recreates designer bowl from old vinyl record for £10 pounds

A woman recreated a popular designer bowl for under ten pounds using everyday items and shared her genius hack on Instagram where it’s racked up millions of views.

Frances Simmons, 39, came up with the clever DIY after seeing the popularity of ruffled and scalloped interior design trends and found a quick way to recreate them for a fraction of the cost.

Instead of buying one of the fancy designer bowls, she used an old vinyl record and spray paint to create an incredible lookalike product.

Since uploading her clever hack to Instagram, where she posts under the handle @100yearsinthemaking, it’s racked up 1.9 million views on the platform, with people commenting how much they love the idea and one commentor calling it ‘utterly genius’.

Frances said: “Whenever I see these things on really nice interiors accounts, I’m always thinking about how I can make it for less.

“We don’t have loads of money and I’ve always had a bit of expensive taste – I can smell the most expensive thing in the shop.

“The record was one pound in a charity shop and the spray paint was around eight pounds from Wicks.”

In the video, the content creator from Croydon, Surrey, can be seen placing the vinyl record in her oven and allowing it to get soft before taking it out and shaping it with her hands.

When happy with the shape of the bowl, she used a primer to prepare the surface of the record and then used a neutral colour to finish the look off.
