Stablecoins are producing tremors in cryptocurrency markets, wiping billions off their value, leading liquid cryptos like Bitcoin to tumble and consumers to lose their investments.
The two primary stablecoins from the crypto project Terra have plummeted, with some comparing the episode to the collapse of Lehman Brothers, which triggered the 2008 financial crisis.
In the very volatile cryptocurrency market, stablecoins claim to be a comparatively safe haven. They are intended to be linked to a fiat currency and typically maintain a one-to-one peg to the US dollar. Recent developments, however, have demonstrated that they are just as volatile as other cryptocurrencies.
The stablecoin TerraUSD, or UST, fell almost completely on Thursday, losing its $1 peg (€0.96) to the dollar and falling as low as $0.26.
Terra was one of the top ten most valued cryptocurrencies, reaching about $120 (€115.28) last month.
Meanwhile, TerraUSD's sister token Luna plummeted more than 97% on May 12, falling below $0.22. By 13 May, Luna had dropped to roughly $0.
