Alopecia Areata is a condition where the immune system attacks the hair follicles. There are several different patterns that this can present in. Until recently there were no medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of alopecia areata. This means that dermatologists were using medications like topical steroids and immune suppressive medications "off label". While these off label medications will still play an important role for many patients with alopecia areata, a new medication called baracitinib has now been approved to treat this condition.

Baracitinib, under the brand name Olumiant, showed that 40% of patients regrew all or most of their hair. So although this represents a huge step forward in the treatment of AA it is not a miracle drug for all patients.

Additionally, baracitinib has some important side effects to be aware of. Some of these side effects were seen in the rheumatoid arthritis population at much higher rates than in the alopecia patient population, so theoretically this drug may be safer for those patients.

Due to the potential for side effects baracitinib will likely be used for the most severe cases of AA after a thorough discussion on the risks and benefits of treatment.
