Taghazout, like almost all Berber villages in southern Morocco, has little known history; oral traditions only report clashes between the united Berber tribes and the Portuguese in the 16th century. Originally, the Berber inhabitants lived in the foothills of the surrounding mountains and used the village solely to store their fishing equipment. As the Spanish gained control of the region in the nineteenth century, factories and mosques were built to house the Berber people, and the village grew into a larger community.
