The Altai Mountains are a mountain range in Central and East Asia, where Russia, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan converge. The region is inhabited by a small but ethnically diverse population, including Russians, Kazakhs, Altaians and Mongols, although mainly represented by indigenous ethnic minorities of semi-nomadic origin. The local economy is based on the breeding of cattle, sheep, horses, hunting, agriculture, forestry and mining. The disputed Altai language family got its name from this mountain range.
