The official history. Don't laugh! Newman College demonstrates Griffin’s innovative use of stone finish to a concrete construction. The building is unique as it was completely designed by Griffin down to the finest details including all fixtures, fittings and furniture.

Newman College’s strong geometric form, includes a dining hall and residential wings and was built using an innovative mix of rough stone base with smooth masses of concrete. Griffin’s wife Marion Mahony designed the park-like surrounds of the building. The garden was one of the first examples of an Australian flora garden designed by a landscape architect.

Perhaps the most striking and innovative feature of Newman College is the domed refectory made from reinforced concrete. When built, it was one of the earliest and largest domes in Australia. To this day, no other dome has designed and built in the same way.

Newman College continues to be used as a University College, and has been an integral part of the University of Melbourne since it opened in 1918.
