Sunday Longplay - Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (SMB2 Japan) (Famicom Disk System)

This week on Sunday Longplay, the celebration of Mario's 35th anniversary continues with a Super Mario Bros. game that I had played two different remade versions of on my channel but never the original version. So what better time than the franchise's 35th anniversary to cover the original release? Welcome to Super Mario Bros. 2 on the Japanese Famicom Disk System, also known in the US as The Lost Levels!

This game was not initially released outside of Japan for two reasons. The first reason was because Nintendo thought it was too hard for American gamers, which I don't believe is an argument that holds water because we still got many harder games like Ninja Gaiden, Ghosts N' Goblins, and Battletoads. The second reason is because they felt it was too much of the same game as the first, though it did add new mechanics like wind, Poison Mushrooms which hurt you instead of powering you up, green springs that launch you off the screen for about 10 seconds, and negative warp zones that send you back to a previous world. Because of these reasons, the US got a different Super Mario Bros. 2 game which was basically a dolled-up installment of another FDS game called Doki Doki Panic, which was a completely different game than SMB1. It wasn't until 1993's Super Mario All-Stars collection on the SNES when it finally saw an American release.

Just like the original Super Mario Bros., there are 8 worlds with 4 levels each, but there are also 5 bonus worlds as opposed to a harder second quest in the first game. The first bonus world is accessed by beating the game without warping. After the ending after 8-4, if you didn't warp, instead of kicking you back to the title screen, you'll gain access to a bonus World 9 with only one life. If you beat World 9, it will continue looping until you die, then you're congratulated as a super player in the Game Over screen and then you get kicked back to the title screen. As for the other bonus worlds, each time you beat the game, you get a star on the title screen. Once you have 8 stars, hold A and press Start and you'll gain access to Worlds A, B, C, and D, which is a much harder mini-quest than the normal game, with most levels being even harder remakes of some of the levels in the base game. In the All-Stars versions, you go straight to World A after beating World 8 (or World 9 if you didn't warp), but in the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe version on the Game Boy Color, the bonus worlds are conspicuously absent.

I beat the game seven times before I started recording so I could cover everything in this game in the Longplay. In those seven off-screen runs, I actually learned how to speedrun some of the levels.
