In order to speak English fluently, you need to learn:
Rhythm
Tone
Inflection
Pauses
These are the parts that are often missing from non-native English speakers. To become fluent in English, you need to work on mastering these 4 parts of speech. Rhythm helps your sentences flow naturally. Tone helps to explain what feeling of the sentence is. Is the sentence happy? Sad? Just a fact. Inflections help the listener know which words are most important in a sentence. Pauses are very important because they emphasize important information in a sentence. Pauses help to prepare the listener for information they need to know.
Today we will look at how important tone is. Tone can be more important than any of the others so we really need to practice this.
The way we say something is very important. Our tone tells the listener a lot about what we are saying.
Let’s look at an example
I am excited to be here.
I love you.
Now you can see why tone is so important. Tone can change the message of what we say. Tone can make the words we say mean something very different.
There are 3 main Tones I want you to know.
Up tone
Down tone
Neutral tone
Up tone is for when things are:
Good
Exciting
Happy
Important
Positive
Down tone is for when things are:
Bad
Not happy
Boring
Negative
Neutral tone is for when things are:
Facts
Not good or bad
Normal
When we tell facts or just basic information, we do not need to have emphasis. We can simply say what we need to say. A neutral tone is used most often for basic conversation.
Let’s practice some
I found some money in my pocket.
The car broke down when I got to work.
Airplanes are safer than walking.
