SUPREME COURT REVERSES ROE v. WADE – ABORTION RETURNED TO THE STATES

The Supreme Court has sided with the state of Mississippi and overturned Roe v. Wade.

The opinion was written by Justice Samuel Alito.

Alito asserted that Roe was “egregiously wrong” and “on a collision course with the Constitution from the day it was decided.”

“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote. “Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.”

Supreme Court strikes down New York gun control law in major gun rights victory

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a New York state gun control law that required gun owners seeking a license to carry a concealed handgun to demonstrate a "proper cause" to do so.

In a 6-3 ruling for New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, the Court reversed lower court decisions upholding New York's law and delivered the most significant victory for gun rights in more than a decade.

New York's state law required people who want to carry concealed handguns outside their homes to show a "proper cause" for having a license to do so. State courts had ruled that gun owners needed to show more than a general desire for protection in order to obtain a concealed carry license; they could not just claim they wanted it for self-defense.

U.S. Supreme Court expands gun rights, strikes down New York law

In a major expansion of gun rights, the Supreme Court said Thursday that Americans have a right to carry firearms in public for self-defence, a ruling likely to lead to more people legally armed in cities and beyond. The ruling came with recent mass shootings fresh in the nation’s mind and gun control being debated in Congress and states.

About a quarter of the U.S. population lives in states expected to be affected by the ruling, which struck down a New York gun law. The high court’s first major gun decision in more than a decade came on a 6-3 split with the court’s conservatives in the majority and liberals in dissent.

Meanwhile, across the street at the Capitol, Congress sped toward passage of its own gun legislation following the mass shootings in Texas, New York and California. Senators cleared the way for its measure, modest in scope but still the most far-reaching in decades.
