Romario made an instant impact since arriving in Barcelona. He had an excellent pre-season that served as an announcement for his rapid success for the Catalan team, with the right to matches and historic milestones.

On his debut in La Liga, Romario scored the three goals in Barça's victory over Real Sociedad. The hat-trick was a symptom of what was to come: he ended that season in the Spanish Championship with five hat-tricks scored. At the time, he was only the third player to achieve this feat.

There were two hat-tricks against Atlético de Madrid, one against Real Madrid and another against Osasuna, in addition to the debut game.
