Is It a Good Idea to Expect Pastors to Be Biblical Counselors?

It is not necessary and, possibly not wise, for a pastor to have the skill to counsel on a formalized level. Pastoring and counseling are two full-time jobs that differ in application and expectation. If he was good at counseling, his caseload would fill up and it would affect his ability to shepherd the whole flock.

He should be a good discipler, but it is better to have a full-time individual who can raise up counselors while counseling. Pastors carrying the load of a full-time shepherd, plus taking on the counseling responsibilities are in a tough spot.
