League of Legends (abbreviated LoL) is a multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games for Microsoft Windows and macOS. Inspired by Defense of the Ancients, the game follows a freemium model. The game was released on October 27, 2009. An abridged version of the game called League of Legends: Wild Rift for mobile and console, was announced on October 15, 2019.

In League of Legends, players assume the role of a "champion" with unique abilities, varying around their class, and battle against a team of other player- or computer-controlled champions. In the main game mode, Summoner's Rift, the goal is to destroy the opposing team's Nexus, a structure that lies at the heart of their base, protected by defensive structures. The setting of the game, Runeterra, has been expanded through a variety of media, including short stories, comic books, computer-generated cinematics, and spin-off games.

League of Legends was well received upon its release, earning praise for its diverse artistic and musical departments, particularly for its character design and production value. By July 2012, it was the most played PC game in North America and Europe in terms of the number of hours played. League has large following in streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch. In September 2019, Riot Games said the game boasted nearly 8 million peak concurrent users each day.

Summoner's Rift
Summoner's Rift is the flagship game mode of League of Legends. When the mainstream press covers the game, it is Summoner's Rift that they refer to. On this map, two teams of five players compete to destroy an enemy structure called a Nexus, which is guarded by the enemy team and a number of defensive structures called turrets, or towers. Each team aims to defend its own structures and destroy the other team's structures. There are six turrets on each lane, three per team, and destroying one generates gold for the team that does so. Two additional turrets protect each team's nexus.

Each nexus is located in each enemy base on opposite sides of the map, in the lower-left and upper-right hand corners. Minions are generated in waves from each team's nexus, which advance toward the enemy base along three paths: top, middle, and bottom lanes. Players compete to advance these waves of minions into the enemy base, which allows them to destroy enemy structures and ultimately win the match. Summoner's Rift matches typically last between 30–40 minutes if played until nexus destruction, but an early surrender functionality is available in the game.

In a given metagame state, what sort of champions belong in each lane can vary widely, but generally, top laners are melee champions, often tanks, and mid laners tend to be champions who deal high magic damage through spells. The bottom lane contains two champions: a marksman with high, consistent damage output at late stages in the game, and a support who protects them, to maximise gold income. Junglers roam around the map, killing neutral monsters for gold and experience instead of minions generated by the nexuses. Often times tanks can be found in the jungle, equipped with crowd control, but offensive junglers are available.
