On Oct. 25, 1994, Susan Smith, 23, told police she was carjacked by a black male, who took her two young sons inside the car. Her story rocked her small hometown of Union, South Carolina and the country. For days, she appeared on TV news, with her estranged husband, David Smith, crying and pleading for the return of her boys. After 9 days, Smith confessed to police that she drove her car, with her boys strapped in their carseats inside, into John D. Long Lake.

Smith was convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison - at Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina - with a possibility of parole after 30 years. She is up for parole on Nov. 4, 2024.
