EU members to vote on Ukraine's EU candidacy. EU membership status unlikely to happen for years.

A large majority of MEPs have supported granting Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia EU candidate status. The vote came ahead of the European Council summit later on Thursday and Friday involving the heads of state and government of all 27 EU member states, which is expected to decide whether to accept the three EU hopefuls’ bids.

However, for the European Union's leadership to recommend that the 27-member bloc votes to designate Ukraine as a candidate for eventual membership is like introducing your dodgy new fiancé to your parents, who fake-smile, knowing that the odds are low of you ever making it down the aisle as a couple.
