Jalen Brunson is a really solid player. Far from a superstar but he does have 1 superpower, a go-to move that he’s perfected and is almost unstoppable with it.
So let’s reveal that in this video and go through why exactly the Knicks are going all out to get him, while the Mavs are fighting to keep Brunson.
And why he’s seeking a 100 million dollar contract. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
Did you know that Luka Doncic and Jalen Bruson were the highest scoring duo throughout the entire playoffs.
Sure Luka is amazing but out of those 54 combined points, Jalen had a healthy 21.6 which is more than max level guys like James Harden, Chris Paul, Jrue Holiday and Klay Thompson.
And not only that, but Brunson is incredibly efficient. Look at this breakdown by area on the floor.
67% in the restricted area, 51% in the paint outside of the restricted area, 47% from midrange, 48.8% from the left corner and 51.4 from the right corner.
The only spot you could say he’s not incredibly efficient is the 3 point semicircle but overall this is what you’re getting with Brunson.
Jalen is incredible at maneuvering the pick and roll and scoring off of it.
According to Synergy’s tracking data he’s in the 91st percentile as a pick and roll ball handler and you can see exactly why. Whether it’s blowing by on the screen and going all the way for the layup, or stopping and firing away when the defender goes under the screen, Brunson is one of the best in the league in this category, while at the same time being super underrated.
And this is how we get to his secret weapon. Something that nobody talks about. And that is his deadly floater.
As you watch this incredible montage of those shots, let me point out that Jalen was the most efficient player in the NBA last season when it came to the floater hitting an incredible 52% of those shots.
You can see that some of these are off of the pick and roll specifically, but the large majority of his floaters come off of a shot fake and a blow by the defender, so as he gets to the paint and the help comes, Brunson is able to flip it up and hit it.
Again, 52% especially seeing how some of these are over the big man while he’s only 6 foot 1 or 1.85 for the non american viewers. That’s impressive.
And everyone that knows him talks about his competitiveness. For his size Jalen is a good defender and because of his strength, players can’t post him up easily.
I’m sure he would also like me to tell you that he was top 5 in the league in distance ran per game, which only further speaks of his motor, the style of play and willingness to go all out in games.
So naturally with numbers and efficiency like that- Brunson as an unrestricted free agent has every right to ask for 25 million dollars per year. And the Knicks were rumored to be making a push for him. Coincidentally or not, they also hired his father to be an assistant coach for Tom Thibodeau. Again, this is probably because these 2 have worked together in Chicago and Minnesota, but hey I gotta mention it.
However, I also gotta mention the newest rumors and reports saying that Brunson has told his teammates that he is definitely returning to Dallas.
I feel like that would be the right move for the Mavs, and I’d like to see them with their new addition Christian Wood, and the return of Tim Hardaway Jr.
What do you think? Will Brunson stay in Dallas or will another team manage to get him with a huge contract? That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
